Descendents of Charles Whittington gather in Madison

Descendants of Charles Lewis and Margaret Alice Jones Whittington met Sept. 7 at the Sauder Community Center in Madison for the annual Whittington reunion.

The family of Charles and Margaret Whittington are all deceased: Phillip, Sadie, Artie, Anna, Ben, Lida, Charles, Thomas, Leslie and Rhoda Mae.

This year’s reunion began by honoring “My Favorite Aunts!” Those specifically honored as Phil Reaka’s favorite aunts were Marjorie Whittington Martin of Madison, Gladys Wamser Whittington (Wife of Louis), Emporia, Ruth Weltha Whittington, (Wife of Clyde), Reading. Hildred Marshall Whittington, (Wife of John Whittington), of Lebo and Mary Bell Whittington, (Wife of Wayne), of Baldwin City were not present.

Family memories and photos were then shared over a potluck dinner. The Whittington reunion began back in the 1920s in Kentucky, where Charles and Margaret first lived.

Charles and Margaret chartered a train with their family and belongings and moved to Kansas in 1911. Kansas was a “dry state” and they wanted to leave the “moonshine” behind.

Those attending related to Phillip H. Whittington and Mae were: Marjorie Whittington Martin, Robert and Vickie Griffith, Doug and Brenda Meyer, Raymond and Sharon Martin from Madison; Jason and Christine, Josie Crawford, Reading; Terry and Jill Griffith, Taylor and Jackson from Topeka, and Eldon, Debra, and Nicole Bailey from Olathe.

Those attending related to Gladys Wamser Whittington (Mrs. Louie Whittington) of Emporia were: Gladys Whittington, Emporia; Robert Whittington, Reading; Richard Whittington, Lawrence; Jim and Terri Whittington of Emporia, and David Whittington of Oak Grove, Mo., Michael, Courtney, Ryan Welch of Emporia.

Those attending related to Ruthie Weltha Whittington (Mrs. Clyde Whittington) of Reading were: Ruth, Roger and Callie Whittington, Reading; Gena, Mike, and Dara Wysocki, Emporia; Rusty Whittington, Derby; Randy and Cheryl Whittington of Emporia.

Those attending related to Hildred Marshall Whittington (Mrs. John Whittington) were: Paul Gene Whittington of Lebo, Jim and JoAnne Booth, Delia, John and Janet Whittington, Douglass, Kansas. Hildred Whittington was not able to attend.

Those attending related to Mary Bell Whittington (Mrs. Wayne Whittington) were: Mary Whittington was unable to attend.

Those attending related to David Leslie (D.L.) Whittington were: David and Becky Whittington, Tammy Whittington, Strong City.

Those attending related to Anna Whittington Hamman (Margaret Edwards) were: Dick and Susie Edwards of Halstead.

Those attending related to Artie May (Whittington) Ford were: Absent from the reunion was John Whittington of Merriam.

Those attending related to Sadie Whittington Thomas were: Anita Thomas Niles Beattie, Leawood, was unable to attend.

Those attending related to Ben Whittington were Arlyn and Martha Jean Schuler of Bella Vista Arkansas and Gail Schuler Chamberlain from Emporia.

Those attending related to Ruth Whittington Reaka was Phil Reaka of Paola.

To honor our dead and our ancestors is to honor our family name. I am proud of this family. I only wish that my family had a similar tradition.

Me too, Jayhawker. I am far, far away from family and when I read about these wonderful reunions, I am happy for them and wish I could experience the same thing.
