County commissioners meet for study session

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Lyon County commissioners had a light agenda this morning during their weekly study session.

Commissioners discussed the purchase of additional CPR/first aid supplies for the county’s employee CPR/first aid training program. Commissioners previously authorized the purchase of mannequins for the program and Wednesday discussed the need for more supplies for the program such as training books, gloves and gauze. Commissioners moved the item to Thursday's action session for consideration.

In other business:

• Commissioners discussed the low bid from Welborn Sales for 300 pieces at 12 foot each of 12 gage galvanized steel bridge plank for $50,760. Welborn was the low bid on the planks.

• Commissioners discussed three certificates for free dumping at the transfer station for America Recycles Day as in the past. A drawing will be conducted for the three certificates. The item was moved to Thursday's agenda.

• Commissioners discussed the purchase of a 1991 force feed loader from state surplus for $15,000 from Special Road, Bridge, Machinery Fund. Commission Chairman Scott Briggs said he didn’t see a need for the equipment, especially since the Road and Bridge department is already going to be over budget for the year.

Commissioner Bob Davis agreed.

“This is not a dirt or rock machine,” Davis said. “This is a snow machine.”

“Where are we going to use that at?” Commission Vice-Chairman Marshall Miller asked.

“We’re not,” Davis said. “It’s strictly a snow machine.”

Miller added that the county typically doesn’t stockpile snow.

“It may be a bargain, but if we don’t need it I don’t think there’s any such thing as a bargain,” Briggs added.

The item was placed on Thursday's agenda for further discussion and consideration.

• Mark McKenna, of facilities, discussed the roof at the Lyon County facilities shop. McKenna said the roof is in bad shape and is saturated down to the wooden deck.

“We have some tiles that are ready to come out,” McKenna said. “We need to do something to preserve the wood on the inside. ... There’s been some days where we’ve literally had a few sprinkles and it (has) leaked. It’s just saturated.”

Commissioners discussed repairing the roof to stop the leaks. The item was placed on Thursday's agenda for further discussion.
