Financial Peace University is offered in Emporia

Financial Peace University, a 13-week program taught by Dave Ramsey, will be offered in Emporia beginning Sept. 24.
According to a news release, the program has helped more than 650,000 families improve their financial future.
The program teaches families and individuals how to handle their money through common-sense principles and small-group accountability. The Emporia classes will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 828 Commercial St. The classes will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 24. Call Carolyn Lackey at 342-4706 or e-mail lueckelackey@prodigy.net for more information or to register.
According to the news release, the average family that completes the program pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 in the first 91 days after beginning the classes and is completely out of debt, except for the mortgage, in 18 to 24 months.
“We’ve actually relieved ourselves of over $50,000 worth of debt in two years just from using these principles,” said Russ Lee, former participant.
Dave Ramsey began teaching the classes in 1994 around Nashville, Tenn. In 1997, FPU was made available on video.
The program is made up of 13 lessons taught by Ramsey. After each lesson, the group meets to help each other plan budgets, discuss successes and temptations and support each other in their journey to beat debt and build wealth.
Topics covered include: saving for emergencies, budgeting, relationship and money issues, buying big bargains, getting out of debt, understanding investments, understanding insurance, retirement and college planning, buyer beware. real estate mortgages and careers and extra jobs.
Each family participating in the class needs a kit which costs about $100. Some scholarships are available for the Emporia classes. The cost of the kit is a lifetime family membership to FPU, allowing the participant to return to any class at any time for a refresher course. The kit also includes an FPU workbook, an FPU envelope system, 13 audio lessons, bonus CD, budgeting forms, debit card holders, and Ramsey’s best-selling book, “Financial Peace.”

Is Ramsey himself going to be appear? Or is it just his FPU videotapes, for which families have to pay the hundred bucks to see (and receive the other products)? It's an important distinction.
Who is this "former participant" Russ Lee? Does he live in Emporia? Or elsewhere? Did this quote come from the press release? Getting out from under $50,000 in debt in two years, for the average family, is an extraordinary claim. Context is needed.

Ok does anyone else see the irony of having to pay $100 to have someone tell you to QUIT spending so much money??

When will we get Dave Ramsey's radio program? maybe in place of some of Bruce Williams.---I am getting tired of him. Ramsey is on every afternoon on the Salina station, but KVOE can surely get this too. His ideas are excellent.
He is on satellite tv ( channel 355, I think) every night.

I signed my husband, myself and our two teenage daughters up for this course. We started it in February. We had $9,000 debt. I was laid off work mid-March. We finished the course a few weeks ago. We have paid down almost $7,000 in debt and that's with me not having a job. We had tried for years to follow a budget. With Dave Ramsey's techniques, we have a grasp on our financial future. I highly recommend this course for anyone.

That's gotta be true! No one would sign up under a fake name on an internet site and make claims that were false!!

Holy cow ! My sister and I paid down $ 45, 000 dollars worth of debt. in five years and we didn't have to pay anyone anything to show us how to do it, now thats what I call common sense ! Paying someone $ 100 dollars for a kit that supposedly teaches you how to do it, to me, is not common sense !
FYI, in order to pay down $50,000 dollars in debt in only 2 years, one would have to have the ability to pay $2083.33 per month in order to accomplish this. How many people living in Emporia make enough money to be able to afford that kind of paydown per month.
My sister and I paid down our debt at the rate of $750.00 per month for 5 years. The only thing we did was make a commitment to ourselves to do this and figured and decided that we wanted to accomplis this in 5 years and decided what the maximum amount we could pay, even with only one contributing and then stick to that amountl, which in our case happened to be $750.00 per month for 5 years.
My only question about this program would be what are the guarantees of success and is there a money back guarantee ?

I think it should be mandatory for ALL of our city leaders to attend this (at their own expense).
Maybe it will help them get a clue that looking for ways to spend even more taxpayer dollars when we are already ridiculously over budget and in debt is a BAD idea.

Why waste money on any education? If I learned anything from "Good Will Hunting" it is that you can get a good education for very little money from the public library, so why waste your money in college. I bet the people complaining about this would not be doing so if it weren't at a Church. Y'all are getting pretty predictable except for being all for the free market with the smoking ban and now the free market is evil with the whole socialized medicine deal. That one threw me for a loop.

No one said that the free market is now evil ! What I and others are saying is that the giant private health insurance companys and health care providers, that are out of control as far as affordability of services to consumers and have become lacking in any compassion and understanding as to what is needed by the consumers in a free market world, which is affordable quality healthcare insurance and lower health care costs. And the smoking ban and rediculous skyrocketing health care costs are two completely different animals.
And you sir are have become very predictable yourself.

Well biscuitboy, the way I see it the extent of my christianity and faith is between me, Jesus and God !
Whether people think of me a christian or not, matters little to me.

Please don't attribute to me something that someone else says. I never accused anyone of being unchristian just kinda inconsistent. I've also said that it's a done deal and you guys "win". My only point in talking about it at all is to point out the fact that it is going to cost more money than all of us put together can imagine and they are going to have to "raise funds" and lower costs like the insurance companies do. In raising funds there will be more "sin" taxes on things such as sodium, soda pop, etc or they are going to "regulate"(control) production on things like they are going to do with tobacco. To cut costs we will see more bans "to make us more healthy" so we don't need as much health care. I was under the impression that this is the kind of government control we all didn't want. It however seems to me though that for some government control is OK as long as it comes from one side. I'm just tryin' to say that it "sounds" OK but it can't stay that way, it's a big can of worms that can't be closed again.
I apologize to all my online friends, I realize I have been getting rather aggressive with this issue recently because I feel pretty strongly about it and can do nothing about it. As Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins said in a song "despite all my rage, I'm still just a rat in a cage" .
Anyway back on topic, I've heard good things about this guys financial teaching. The cost doesn't seem that high considering the price of education anywhere. I've gone to some one day classes for work and I know they cost a lot more than $100.

I do understand your concern about government and I too am concerned about how far the government may get involved.
I am also frustrated at the runaway costs, greed and profiteering of some, not all, companys and business. And the lack of wanting to do anything about it or the ability to come up with a plan to fix the problem, either by the companys and businesses themselves or our government.
The growing lack of caring and compassion for ones fellow man and love of material wealth above all, worries me !
It seems to me that the obsession with accumlating material wealth ( money and what it buys ) has become akin to the worship of false gods and golden Idols.
I am not a wealthy man nor do I desire to be a wealthy man . I am ony a humble man, who, by the grace of God has survived for a while and with the grace of God will continue to survive !
You might say I am a wealthy man, for having a respectful and loving family and friends. In that respect I am truely wealthy.

I would say that you, methusla, have a very good understanding of wealth. If we could get people to listen to us on what true wealth is the government wouldn't have to force us to take care of each other but nobody wants to listen to fools, even if they are right.""A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country"
