Hearing on smoking
The city will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Little Theater upstairs in the Municipal Building, 111 E. Sixth Ave., to discuss proposals to regulate smoking in public places. Public comment is encouraged. The city commission will attend the meeting.

Democrats at Demofest
James Bordonaro, Stan and Barbara Fowler, Sharon Karr and Alan Rees of Emporia attended the First District Democrats meeting held in conjunction with the the 2008 Kansas Democratic Party Demofest on Sept. 6 in Wichita.
Featured speakers at Demofest included former U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery, U.S. Senate candidate who is running against incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Roberts; James Bordonaro, 1st Distrist U.S. Congress candidate challenging incumbent Rep. Jerry Moran; and state Sen. Donald Betts, 4th District U.S. Congress candidate who is challenging Rep. Todd Tiahrt.

Camp Alexander registration
Registration is open for Camp Alexander Day Camp (ages 5-14) being held from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. through May 2009. The next Day Camp will be on Oct. 10. The first week of Summer Camp will be June 1-June 5, 2008. Summer Camp runs every week until school starts (for ages K-12). The cost is $17 each day with a week in advance pre-registration. Late enrollment will have an additional $5 fee; drop-ins, $10 additional fee. Fees are valid until Feb. 1, 2009. Snacks and beverages are provided. Attendees are to bring sack lunches. Citywide garage sale

Picnic location moved
The location of the Republican Party Picnic, planned for 5:30 p.m., has been moved to the Lyon County Courthouse Annex, 402 Commercial St., according to an announcement Friday afternoon from County Clerk Karen Hartenbower.
Republican headquarters will open
Republicans will open their election headquarters on Monday at 13 East Sixth Ave., according to an announcement from party chairman Chuck Hanna.
The office will operate from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
Supplies of campaign literature and yard signs are limited, but should be fully available in about two weeks, Hanna said.

Siren out of service
Emporia Police Chief Gary Smith reported Friday afternoon that the emergency warning siren in Jones Park has been taken out of service until it can be repaired.
Smith said the wet weather had caused the siren to begin sounding on its own and immediate repairs are not possible.
