Cowgirls
The ESU Department of Art presents “Cowgirls” Contemporary Portraits of the American West” on exhibit in the Norman R. Eppink Gallery. This exhibition, which continues through October, features 30 photographs accompanies by narrative quotes that reveal the complex, unglamorous — yet often inspiring — reality of women in the modern West, stated the news release. Gallery hours are 9 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Information: 341-5689 or see www.emporia.edu/art/.
On the porch
The first event of “Sundays on the Porch” at the William Allen White State Historic Site, 927 Exchange St., will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 21. Kevin Rabas, assistant professor of creative writing in the Department of English at Emporia State University, has invited local poets to read their works. According to the press release, poetry was a part of William Allen White’s life as his first published work was a book of poetry, “Rhyme of Two Friends,” with co-author Albert Bigelow Paine, literary agent to Mark Twain.
Featured at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 will be Max McCoy, journalism instructor in the ESU Department of English, who will talk about investigative journalism. W.A. White’s career began during the era of yellow journalism and he was a forerunner of modern journalistic standards which clearly separated news from editorials, stated the press release.
The final program, on Oct. 5, will be given by Nick Gronseth, historian and site administrator of the site. Gronset will talk about the politics of the William Allen White era, examining the political climate during the time when White was writing his Pulitzer Prize-winning editorials.
Tours of the White home will be available at the regular admission price of $5 for adults; $3 for seniors; $2 for students, which includes the program. A contributions is suggested in support of the site from those who want to enjoy the program but do not wish to tour the home.
The programs were designed as a tribute to William Allen and Sallie Lindsay White, whose hospitality was legendary. The White’s welcomed anyone, from passersby to presidents, as a guest in their home, particularly on the front porch.
