Pioneer Bluffs talk will focus on restoring ecology

Monday, September 8, 2008

Jonathan Todd, president of Todd Ecological Design, will lead a discussion later this month in Chase County on ecological technologies for environmental restoration. The discussion, “Ecology Site Restoration” will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Pioneer Bluffs near Matfield Green.

The gathering, part of the Prairie Talk series, will explore ecological design, a science based on applying the principles that govern the natural world to human systems. According to a news release, by decoding how nature operates, systems can be created that exhibit the amazing qualities of ecosystems, such as self-organization, self-repair and the long-term cycling of energy and nutrients. This is achieved through making a partnership with nature and putting assemblages of living organisms to work for a human need.

Todd Ecological Design of Woods Hole, Mass., is an award-winning water and natural resources planning firm.  Reservations are requested for this free Prairie Talk and can be made by e-mailing Lynn Smith, executive director, at lynn@pioneerbluffs.org or by calling (620) 753-3484.

Ecology Site Restoration is part of a Prairie Talk series offered by Pioneer Bluffs Foundation. The Foundation was formed in December, 2006 with the purchase of the 1908 home of Henry Rogler and several distinctive barns. Pioneer Bluffs Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places, is located one mile north of Matfield Green or 15 miles south of Cottonwood Falls on the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, Kansas Highway 177.

The mission of the Pioneer Bluffs Foundation is to celebrate the history and experience of the tallgrass prairie and its Flint Hills ranching heritage and to revitalize Pioneer Bluffs as a community resource and gathering place where we explore sustainable ways to live in harmony with nature.
