Tech college offers community outreach classses

The Flint Hills Technical College, 3301 W. 18th Ave., is offering these classes for community members.

All classes are held at the tech college, and advance registration is requested. For more information or to register, call 343-4600.

• QuickBooks Fundamentals with Nicole Mortensen, $89, 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. QuickBooks is designed for the small to midsized business owner who enjoys Quicken’s ease of use but prefers a more traditional approach to accounting. Learn how this well-designed program can make it a snap to set up a chart of accounts, reconcile your checking account, create and print invoices, receipts, and statements, track your payables, inventory, and receivables, create estimates, and generate reports.

• Microsoft Word Intermediate with Kim Glover, 83, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 13. Explore more advance Word features and functions, such as creating columns and sections, formatting tables, importing table data, applying styles, adding headers and footers, using the drawing canvas, and creating templates. Prerequisite: Word Fundamentals or comparable knowledge.

• Computers for Beginners with Julie Cooper, $63, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13. Introduction course for individuals with limited or no computer experience. Topics will include computer operations, computer programs, Internet searching and navigation.

• How to Make Tamales with Regina Murphy, $21, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15. Learn how to make the perfect tamale batter, with and without lard, and the best techniques for rolling them up in dried corn husks. Enjoy the fruits of your labor when you take them home to steam!

• Cheap and Easy Worm Composting with Tracey Graham, $13, 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 16. Garbage-eating worms provide a simple, yet effective means to convert organic waste to nutrient-rich material capable of supporting plant growth. In a hands-on demonstration, learn how to build your own worm bin for home composting of plant materials at very little cost in under an hour. Includes discussion of the basics of vermiculture, a brief literature review and trouble-shooting tips. A drawing at the end will determine which lucky class participant will take home the completed bin.

• Backyard Strawberries with Joan Young, $11, 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 17. This class talks about growing strawberries for the home gardener. Strawberries are an easy to grow fruit crop that will reward the home gardener with ample harvests for many years. Strawberry pests and problems are on the agenda as well as strawberry farms and tunnel farms.
