Final
Emporia State is 2-0 after a 27-14 victory over Augustana Saturday at Welch Stadium.
The Hornets benefited from 115 yards of Vikings' penalities and capitalized on two first half turnovers in a game that was never really close. ESU scored touchdowns after both turnovers, the first a Kaden Adams interception and the second a A.J. Brinkman fumble recovery.
The Vikings scored two late touchdowns to ruin ESU's bid at a second straight shutout, but that was the only thing they ruined.
Andre Sloan El starred again for the Hornets following his solid week one performance with 132 yards passing and a touchdown. Sloan El also added a rushing touchdown and 15 yards on the ground. Through the air, he was efficient, completing 10 of 14 passes.
Katrel Larkins led the defense in tackles for a second straight week, finishing with eight. Nathan Linsey added seven tackles. But it was senior defensive tackle Brian Tarkington who stared for the defense. Tarkington had four tackles for a loss, including a sack. He finished with five tackles and a pass breakup.

Augustana is making a late comeback attempt. The Vikings have scored on two straight drives, taking on 44 seconds to go 49 yards in six plays on the last drive. ESU leads 27-14.
Tyler Schulte threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to pull within two touchdowns.

Augustana broke Emporia State’s chance at two straight shutouts to start the season. Tyler Schulte completed five straight passes to take the Vikings 71 yards in nine plays on the touchdown drive.
The Hornets lead 27-7. Emporia State was trying to start the season with consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1985. The last time ESU had consecutive shutouts was 1986.
12:25 left in the fourth quarter
Freshman Zach Rampy took over for Andre Sloan El at quarterback and kept the Hornets offense rolling. Rampy gave the Hornets a 27-0 lead on an eight-yard touchdown run.
Rampy finished the drive, but Adrian Abner got it started.
Abner had a 12 yard run and then caught a screen on the next play and went 29 yards, zigzagging across the field to keep the run alive. Abner had been kept in check through three quarters with one yard on three carries.

End of third quarter
Emporia State and Augustana played to a scoreless third quarter.
The Vikings moved the ball on their first drive getting all the way to the ESU two-yard line, but the ESU defense kept Augustana out of the end zone. Katrel Larkins made a tackle on fourth down to give the Hornets back the ball.
The Vikings pulled quarterback Luke Butler near the end of the first half and moved receiver Tyler Schulte to quarterback. Schulte played quarterback last season for the Vikings in their final three games.
With Schulte at quarterback, the Vikings kept the ball on the ground on their first drive and Schulte only attempted two passes in the third quarter.
The ESU offense did not have much success in the third quarter. An Andre Sloan El 25-yard pass to Lucas Sullivan was the biggest play of the quarter, which came at a good time as the Hornets were on their own two-yard line.
Halftime
Andre Sloan El led the Hornets two-minute offense on an 80-yard touchdown drive that ended with a Sloan El eight-yard touchdown run to give the Hornets a 21-0 lead at halftime.
Sloan El hit Sean Partridge for a 49-yard pass to set up the score. Sloan El scored with 24.8 seconds left in the half.
The rain didn’t seem to affect Sloan El in the first half as the junior quarterback went 9-for-12 for 107 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 18 yards. Seville Ko led the Hornets rushing attack with 25 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Partridge led the receivers with three catches for 61 yards.
The ESU defense created two turnovers in the first half, both leading to touchdowns. Defensive tackle Brian Tarkington shined in the first half with four of his five tackles for a loss. Tarkington contributed in ruinging Viking drives when the they had been moving the ball. Tarkington also had a quarterback rush and a sack.
ESU linebacker Nathan Linsey had six tackles and linebacker Katrel Larkins had five.
Augustana had 123 yards of offense — compared to 136 for ESU — but the Vikings were hurt by seven penalties for 80 yards. On the one drive where they entered the redzone, penalities and tackles for a loss created a third and 60.
5:36 left in the second quarter
A bad Augustana snap, recovered by ESU's A.J. Brinkman, led to another ESU touchdown, giving the Hornets a 14-0 lead on Seville Ko's six-yard touchdown run.
Augustana snapped the ball from the ESU 40-yard line, and the ball went over Luke Butler's head and rolled all the way to the 11-yard line where Brinkman fell on the ball. The Vikings stopped the Hornets, forcing a 30-yard field goal by Wlll Maxwell, but the Vikings ran into Maxwell and a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Hornets another chance.
Ko ran up the middle for his second touchdown of the season. The Hornets have taken advantage of the Vikings' two turnovers, scoring on the ensuing drive on both.
1:24 left in the first quarter
ESU defensive lineman Kaden Adams intercepted a Luke Butler pass, setting up the ESU offense on its first scoring drive.
The Hornets took a 7-0 lead on an Andre Sloan El five-yard touchdown pass to Danny McEvoy. Sloan El rolled out on the play and found McEvoy in the back of the end zone with two defensive linemen giving chase. The Hornets went 43 yards in eight plays. Sloan El hit tight end Lucas Sullivan for a 21-yard pass down the seam to set up the touchdown.
The Augustana offense has moved the ball, but the Hornets' defense has come up big when it needed to. The Vikings' Ryan Grossman missed 32-yard field goal earlier in the quarter that would have given the Vikings the lead.

I think these guys are playing incredible. I have to say, though, that as much as I enjoy watching the kids play their hearts out, I am totally disappointed in the fan participation. I think that it is very sad that the kids have to get the fans pumped up and making any noise. These guys are out there playing their hearts out for their fans as much as themselves and I think that the Hornets fans need to start making a little more noise on their own!!!!!
