Cheerleader clinic for kids

Emporia High School cheerleaders will be host for a cheerleader clinic — “Cheerleaders Rock ... ’Cuz They Know How to Roll” — from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, and on Thursday, Sept. 18.

Students in the clinic will perform on Friday, Sept. 19, at the EHS football game at Welch Stadium.

Children from three years of age through sixth grade are eligible to participate. The cost is $20 per child, with siblings receiving a $5 discount after one child in the family is enrolled.

Early registration, to guarantee a T-shirt, is needed by Friday, Sept. 12.

Call Coach Tara Henton, 341-2365, for more information, or e-mail thenton@usd253.org.

Has non-profit status

Winding Road Horse Equine Rescue and Retirement has achieved non-profit, 501(c)(3) status. The rescue organization, which is near BETO Junction, gives rescued horses a safe place to live and older horses a place to retire. For more information, go to www.windingroadequinerescue.org

Republican Women meeting

“Welcome back to school” is the theme for the meeting at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 of the Santa Fe Trail Republican Women of North Lyon County. The business meeting will convene at 2 p.m. at the Allen Senior Center. Roll call will be answered by naming a school and its location from your grade school days. After the business meeting, the group will car pool to the Rapp Schoolhouse for the program, “Welcome back to school.” The Rapp School, the nearest known grade school listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is on Highway 56 east of the Osage-Lyon County line on the north side of the highway. A welcome and history will be given Patricia Fredrickson and Dorothy Chisham, local Rapp historians.

Because September is Literacy Month and the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, charter member Lynette Olson will provide literacy information including handouts and book talks from current authors about the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Olson is coordinator of adult services at the Emporia Public Library. A report about district news will be given by Barbara Wells of Elmdale, the Kansas Federation of Republican Women 1st district director.

Those attending are to park on the east side of the school, enter the east door, turn right and go up to the classroom. After adjournment, attendees are to leave from the south door for a group picture on the front steps. For more information, call Christine Wallace at (620) 528-3777 or Connie Fager at (785) 528-3623.
