AS AN ALUMNA of Emporia State University, I would like to send a word of welcome to the new students who have begun their first semester at our fine university.
On the front page of the Emporia Gazette was an encouraging article about ESU’s accomplishments and President Lane’s five-year strategic plan, but in the lower right-hand corner is a picture which could lead to the assumption that kegs and drinking are an accepted and necessary part of a successful college career. On the contrary, this practice has often interfered with a student’s success.
So, as an alumna with two degrees from ESU who leads a useful and productive life, and has yet to have her first beer, I encourage new students to find some like-minded friends with whom to enjoy their college years without alcohol and with their full faculties always on board.
Welcome, students and have a great first semester!

I agree. I had friends in high school and at ESU who didn't go out drinking. We had lots of fun and went to the bars etc just didn't get drunk. Often it is more fun to be sober and mess with drunk people. :) I'm all for legal aged people drinking casually. Just know when to stop or don't start.

As an ESU grad with 2 degrees and an MBA I would like to say I disagree with you. When of age there is nothing wrong with drinking beer in a manner which is neither destructive to yourself or to others, therefore acceptance of drinking in this manner is conceded. People are the barometers for their success, not alcohol. The message trying to be conveyed here is fun, and if done in a responsible manner than it is what it is.
