Las Casitas scholarships
The Las Casitas Association Community Foundation has established a scholarship fund at Emporia State University for Emporia High School graduates, intending to encourage local students to continue their education within the Emporia community.
The association established the fund at the ESU Foundation to support its belief in the importance of higher education and to provide an educational opportunity to all students. The scholarship is reserved for full-time ESU students with a minimum GPA of 2.8 who are Emporia High School graduates.
The association was founded to help educate Hispanic youth on the history of “La Colonia,” Emporia’s oldest Hispanic community, in order to preserve Hispanic culture and heritage and maintain the Emporia neighborhoods, or barrios, for future generations.
To contribute or learn more, call the ESU Foundation at (620) 341-5440 or go online at www.emporia.edu/saf/foundation.
Webb scholars
Three students at Emporia State University have been chosen as recipients of the John R. Webb Scholarship for 2008-09. Anna Altwies, Andrew Donahoo and Taylor Relph will receive the award for this school year.
Webb, vice president for student affairs at ESU who retired in 1986 and died in 2005, is remembered as a mentor to many ESU students who went on to great success. He is recognized for encouraging and guiding not only academic success but success in life, a spirit that the scholarship is designed to encourage.
