Concert

DJ Highnoone from Kansas City will be the host for Take Over II at 10 p.m. Saturday at Beer:30 (Garden), 402 Merchant St.

Recital

The Emporia State University Department of Music opens the fall 2008 season with a violin recital by Kanako Ito at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall on the ESU campus. On Sept. 13, the Annual Benefit Concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m., also in Heath Recital Hall. General admission is $5; $4 for students and senior citizens.

Topic: Surveys

Steve Brosemer will be the September speaker for the Night at the Museum program at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lyon County Historical Museum. “Brought back by popular demand,” Brosemer will continue his talk about the early days of surveying, said the news release. There is no charge for this event.

Story hour

Story Hour at Elmendaro Township Library in Hartford, which begins Tuesday, will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., with the theme of Caterpillars and Butterflies. Children ages 0-5, accompanied by an adult, are invited to participate in Story Hour activities: listening to stories, music, games and crafts. Guest readers are invited to share with the children; Chelsis Andrews is the craft leader. Themes for Sept. 16: It’s Raining; Sept. 13: Wild West Show; Sept. 30: Lady Bugs.

Acting class

A new class is being offered by the Emporia Arts Council called “I Wanna Be In A Play.”

For those 7 years or older, it’s a chance to be in a play. Everyone in the class will get a part. The two-hour class starts runs through Oct. 11. It meets from 1 to 3 p.m. each Saturday. The fee is $60.

This class is being taught by Penni Hansen and Susie LeGault who are the current directors of The Young Thespian Players. Space is limited. Call the Arts Council at 343-6473 or stop by the office at 618 Mechanic to enroll.  Stallions

The “World Famous” Lipizzaner Stallions will be in Emporia for the “Dancing White Stallions” show at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the W.L. White auditorium. Art classes

Arts and Crafts classes at the Flint Hills Technical College include Knitting, through Sept. 29; Beginning Jewelry: Bezels and Wirework, Sept. 24-Nov. 19; Basic Sewing Techniques (Sessions 1 and 2), Oct. 4 and Oct. 11; Introduction to Floral Design, Oct. 15.

ESU exhibits

An exhibition of prints from the personal collection of Wayne Kimball showcasing his talents as a master lithograph printer will be shown through September in the Norman R. Eppink Gallery in King Hall at ESU. For more information, call 341-5689 or see www.emporia.edu/art/.

ESU senior art student Jay Meara has an exhibition of his work, “Organ,” in the Gilson Memorial Gallery at ESU. The galleries are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. All exhibitions are open and free to the public.

EAC season package

The Emporia Arts Council opens the 2008-2009 season with The Golden Dragon Acrobats at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Emporia Granada Theatre. 2008 will mark the highlight of the Golden Dragons’ touring career with their 30th anniversary U.S. tour. Today, they are the premier acrobatic touring company, said the news release. The company “uses award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance and ancient and contemporary music to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty.” Other shows offered will be the Doug Talley Quartet on Nov. 5; “Nunsense” with Sally Struthers, Jan. 10, 2009; The Millers blues band, Jan. 30; Montana Repertory Theatre “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Feb. 28; classical harpist Emmanuel Ceysson, March 26; Mizzoula Children’s Theatre, “The Princess and the Pea,” April 3 and 4. Student contest

The annual Kansas Don’t Spoil It Calendar Contest, sponsored by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), features student artwork for each month of the year. According to the news release, the KDHE is “looking for artwork that demonstrates the importance of good environmental practices and shows things that everyone can do to preserve the beauty and natural resources of Kansas.” The postmark deadline for artwork is Sept. 30.
