The Emporia State’s soccer team is off to its best start in school history after a winless 2007.
The Hornets improved to 2-0 on Sunday with a 1-0 victory against East Central in St. Joseph, Mo.
Senior Shelley Marsh scored the game’s only goal on a shot from 15 yards out. Jennifer Stillmock and Tina Commons combined for the Hornets first shutout of the season. Stillmock had five saves and Commons had two.
Emporia State opened its season on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Angelo State. The win broke a 28-game losing streak that started in 2006.
ESU’s previous best start was in 2005 when the Hornets were 1-0-1 after two games and went on to start the season 4-0-1.
Emporia State will try to move to 3-0 on Sunday against Missouri S & T. The game will be played on campus at the ESU Pitch, north of the Student Rec Center. Game time is 1 p.m.
