EHS soccer team gets blown out in coach’s first game

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Emporia High boys soccer coach Angel Cornejo’s concerns about the Spartans’ defense turned out to be more than justified in their opening game in the Titan Classic in Wichita.

The Spartans’ young defenders were no match for Maize, which carved up EHS for an 8-1 victory on Monday, spoiling Cornejo’s first game as head coach.

“Our kids played so hard,” Cornejo said, “but Maize was just too good for us. They outplayed us in every part of the field.”

Cornejo was looking for a way to field a capable defense before the school year started. On Monday, he said, the inexperience of his defense showed; he started two sophomores on the defensive end, Alex Sandoval and Blaze Witten, and a freshman, Oscar Lemus, along with senior Brian Tabares.

Jared Schaeffer netted the only goal for the Spartans, scoring with 18 minutes remaining in the first half. But by halftime, EHS was already down 4-1.

“It was possible to come back (in the second half),” Cornejo said. “But they were all trying to do it by themselves, instead of doing it as a team, and well, that’s pretty hard to do.”

Cornejo said he would shuffle the lineup for the next game to get two seniors back on defense. The Spartans continue play in the Titan classic Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. EHS will play either Wichita South or Great Bend.
