Another Emporia Middle School student has qualified for state and national recognition through the 2008 Duke University Talent Identification Program.
Eighth grader Lauren Miller was notified that her score on the ACT taken in seventh grade put her in the category for the recognition. Lauren is the daughter of Tim and Angie Miller of Emporia.
Six other EMS eighth graders qualified for state recognition last spring. Lauren learned of her status this fall because she took the qualifying test later in the year, according to her teacher Ruth Vilander.
Duke TIP identifies students in 16 states in the southeast, midwest, and southwest who have scored in the 95th percentile on a grade-level achievement test. As part of the program, these academically talented students take above level college-entrance exams (SAT or ACT) to learn more about their abilities.
State recognition is for those students who earned scores equal to or better than half the college-bound seniors who took the tests. National recognition is given to students who have earned scores equal to or better than 90% of college-bound seniors who took the same tests.
