Woodwinds

The ESU Department of Music presents the Woodwind Showcase at 3 p.m. Sunday at Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall. On Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m., there will be an Opera Performance at Heath Recital Hall. General admission is $5; $4, students and senior citizens. Information: 341-5431.

Art exhibit

The ESU Department of Art annual Faculty and Emeritus Faculty Exhibition will be shown in November and December. The opening reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the lobby of Bruder Theatre at King Hall. Information: 341-5246.

Book discussion

The next book in the Emporia Public Library discussion series is Pulitzer Prize winner "All the King's Men" by Robert Penn Warren. This classic book is “generally regarded as the finest novel every written on American politics,” stated the news release. Discussions begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the library's large meeting room. The last book in the 2008 series is "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson, to be discussed at 7 p.m. Dec. 3. Multiple copies of the books are available for checkout. Arts Council series

The Emporia Arts Council next presentation will be the The Doug Talley Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Emporia Granada Theatre. Talley is a "premier jazz performer and educator," stated the press release. The Quartet's performance will include a special appearance with the Emporia High School jazz band. Museum program

The November Night at the Museum at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 will present staff member Rita Scribner talking about the life and times of Civil War veteran William Harrison Mapes. Also, there will be a research of the history of one’s home using the Lyon County Historical Society’s Archives and Research Center. The free program is open to the public.

Benefit concert

A benefit concert will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Granada Theatre, 807 Commercial St., after which there will be a reception. The program will feature Callie Agler, performer in Branson; the ESU Community Chorus, the Rev. Darren Henson and Anna Ryan, vocalists; St. James Baptist Church Choir; Christian bands Sweetwater and Via Crucis and internationally known pianist Angel Yang. Tickets, $10 each person, are available at Catholic Charities, 702 Commercial St., Suite 3-A; the Emporia Area Chamber and Visitors Bureau; and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Net proceeds from the concert, presented by the Emporia Advisory Council of Catholic Charities, will benefit the children and families served by the Emporia office of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, whose motto is "Serving People of All Faith."

Concert in Gridley

The acoustic duo “Sweet Wednesday” will perform at 7 p.m. Monday at the Gridley Community Building in Gridley. Award winning singers and songwriters Dave Falk and Lisa Housman make up the duo, delivering tales that are melodic, comic and touching, with acoustic guitar, harmonica and astounding harmonies, stated the news release.
