The eighth-ranked Emporia State volleyball team swept No. 14 Central Missouri on Wednesday in Warrensburg, Mo. for the first time in school history.
The Hornets had a .302 hitting percentage in their 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 win.
Central Missouri opened the first set with a 3-1 lead and then Emporia State scored nine of the next 12 points and Ting Liu scored on four straight serves to close out the set.
The Hornets dropped the first point of the second set and then reeled off nine straight points to build an insurmountable lead. In the final set, Emporia State fell behind 12-8 and rallied to record the sweep.
Emporia State improved to 27-2 and 13-1 in the MIAA. The Jennies dropped to 11-3 in the league and are tied for second with Washburn. The Lady Blues had a 12-match winning streak but fell on Wednesday 3-1 at Nebraska-Omaha.
Hannah Carter led the Hornets with 13 kills and a .571 hitting percentage and was the only Hornet to finish with double-figure kills. Arica Shepard and Brittney Miller both finished with nine kills.
Liu recorded a double-double with 36 assists and 14 digs to go along with four kills on a .375 hitting percentage. Megan Koster tied Liu with a team-high 14 digs and Amy Byfield added 11 digs.
Emporia State returns home to White Auditorium on Saturday against Nebraska-Omaha. First serve is at 7 p.m.
