Grass contest
The Greenwood County Conservation District is sponsoring a “grassroots” contest during its annual Cattleman’s Day Celebration in Eureka on Saturday.
“Big Bluestem is a signature species of the tallgrass prairie, and this year’s plentiful rainfall has it growing to truly stunning heights,” according to Katie Wilson of the conservation district. “This is certainly so in Greenwood County, where many ranchers are especially proud of their bluestem pastures.”
Whoever enters the tallest stalk of Big Bluestem, Andropogon grerardii, in Greenwood County will be declared “King of the Prairie” on Saturday.
The entries will be displayed at the Eureka United Methodist Church and the winners announced at 10 a.m. Entries must be from within Greenwood County and the current growing season. Prizes consist of steak dinners, bragging rights and more, Wison said. For more information, call the conservation district at (620) 583-5544, Ext. 3.
