New tiebreaking system means if Spartans win, they’re in

Emporia High's Mark Kolmer looks for a way past the Manhattan defense during EHS's away win Friday, Oct. 10.

The confusing, sometimes brain-busting, God-just-draw-me-a-diagram method the Kansas State High School Activities Association uses for determining district football tiebreakers really isn’t so complicated for Emporia High, once you’ve trudged through a few numbers.

Beat Salina South on Friday, and Emporia is in the Class 5A state playoffs. Win by at least five points, and the Spartans are the District 5 champions and get a home playoff game in Round One at state.

Lose to South, and — barring a miracle win by Topeka West over Salina Central — the Spartans are done.

That’s it. For Emporia, it’s not brain surgery, rocket science, a partial differential equation or even the BCS formula. Win and you’re in, and winning by five would be great.

Win by 12 and Salina Central is in.

Soooo, if you're going to win, make it a romp.

The Mustangs thank you.
