Americus meeting
The City of Americus will have the monthly work session meeting at 7 p.m. today at City Hall. The agenda includes the 2007 audit report.
Olpe meeting
The City of Olpe will have a special meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall to discuss economic development.
Government day
The Santa Fe Trail Republican Women of North Lyon County will be the host for the third annual Government Day for Northern Heights High School. This event will begin at 1:30 p.m Thursday at the Allen Community Center (former Allen High School gymnasium). Attending will be students of government teacher Shawn Wilson and band director Bob Moews. The 45-member NHHS Wildcat Band will play before the program.
The program will be a discussion about abolitionist John Brown and Bleeding Kansas 1855-1858. The presenter will be Mary Buster of Emporia, the second great-grandniece of John Brown and second great-granddaughter of Samuel Adair, co-founder of the Kansas Republican Party organized May 18, 1859 at Osawatomie. Refreshments will be served. Visitors are welcome to attend. Members are to remain after the program for the end of the year agenda.

A. Fern Matile Windler will celebrate her 90th birthday at an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Horizon Plaza, 1531 Wheeler St. Hosts will be her children. The family suggests no gifts, but cards may be sent to her at No. 411 at the above address.
Last day for S tags
Friday is the last day to renew vehicle registrations without penalty for people whose names begin with S, according to an announcement from Lyon County Treasurer Dora Hartig.
Renewals may be done from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Hartig’s office at the Lyon County Courthouse, 430 Commercial St. Proof of insurance is needed for each vehicle.
