A week of chats

The Gazette has eight online chats scheduled with candidates this week, beginning this evening, when the candidates for Lyon County Clerk will be on The Gazette Web site, www.emporiagazette.com. Republican Tammy Vopat will answer questions beginning at 6 p.m. and Democrat Mike Dorcey will begin a session at 7:15 p.m.

The schedule for the rest of the week: Tuesday, 3rd District Lyon County Commission, Rollie Martin at 7 p.m. Thursday; 2nd District commission, Phil Winter, 1:30 p.m., Teresa Walters, 2:45 p.m.; Thursday, 17th District Kansas Senate, Kitty Frank, 5:45 p.m., Jim Barnett, 7 p.m.

Suggest a judge

A nominating commission charged is asking the public to recommend candidates for district magistrate judge in Chase County. Judge John Conklin is retiring Dec. 13.

Magistrate judges must be residents of the county in which they are appointed, be a graduate of high school or its equivalent and, if not regularly admitted to the practice of law, be certified by the Supreme Court of Kansas as qualified to serve.

The nominating commission includes Justice Carol Beier, Ted Hollembeak, Michael Helbert, W. Irving Shaw, Kenneth Buchele, Lloyd Stone, William T. North, Leigh Ann Crofoot and Gary Snead.

Suggestions may be sent to Beier at The Kansas Supreme Court, 301 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66612. Suggested appointees must complete forms available in the office of the clerk of the district court in Cottonwood Falls. The forms must be submitted to the Supreme Court office by noon, Nov. 20.
