OCT. 19-25 was National Friends of the Library week, making this a good time to publicly thank the Friends of the Emporia Public Library who contribute so much of their time and expertise to significantly enhance our services.
Our Friends group began in 1973 and over the course of the past 35 years they have donated significant funds to cover the costs of children’s programming, special collections and equipment. The Friends contributed to our automation and on-line catalog project and annually add to an endowment to enhance our materials collection. The annual “Super Friend” award honors local donors, volunteers and other supporters who make a difference at the library. Our Brown Bag concerts each summer depend heavily on support from the Friends. The free magazine exchange provides about 750 magazines weekly to the community. The Friends Fall Book Sale began with a Friends Preview Sale on Oct. 16. The fall and spring sales generate funds and help recycle books, videos, tapes, compact discs and more in the Emporia area.
I know that the Emporia Public Library is a source of pride for our community. Our Friends group is a source of pride as well. I hope everyone will consider joining and supporting this outstanding group.
