County’s advance voting going strong

Monday, October 27, 2008

As of this morning, 1,396 voters had cast advance ballots in the Lyon County clerk’s office. And another 530 paper ballots had been mailed, Clerk Karen Hartenbower said.

On top of that, 133 residents of Emporia care centers voted last week, thanks to efforts by the League of Women Voters and the clerk’s office. League members received training as poll workers on Oct. 15 from staff at the clerk’s office. Then they headed to care centers with touch-screen machines and paper ballots.

Last week, workers offered advance voting to residents of Emporia Rehabilitation Center, Broadview Towers, Horizon Plaza, Flint Hills Care Center and Presbyterian Manor. On Tuesday, residents of Holiday Resort will be able to vote. On Wednesday, Sterling House residents will have voting brought to them.

“Going out to vote would provide a hardship to many of the residents,” said Jacque Heckman-James of the League of Women Voters, “and for that reason many have not voted in recent elections.

“The voters are excited about this opportunity and are especially pleased to have the large print available on the touch screen machine,” Heckman-James said.

Advance voting at the Lyon County Courthouse ends at noon Nov. 3. Polls open for the general election at 7 a.m. Nov. 4. They close at 7 p.m. that day. That’s also the deadline for any mailed paper ballots to be received at the clerk’s office.
