Stealing signs

Friday, October 24, 2008

I DON’T want to think that I live in a community that is so narrow-minded its citizens cannot tolerate yard signs that support candidates they oppose. It is becoming increasingly evident, however, that there is a concerted effort to remove Democratic (especially Obama) signs from Emporia yards. “My friends,” that’s stealing.

How very sad!

In the news there have also been quite a bit of McCain/Obama signs stolen in KC, and many that have had swastika's spraypainted over them. Idiots everywhere.

Do people ever stop and think that basically, they are driving people even more in the OPPOSITE direction of what they think they are?

Hmm.... unless, it is people from the same party doing it as a ploy...... well, who knows..... they're still all idiots.....

I would love to booby trap mine, if only I was not of afraid of being sued by the perpetrator.

Me too, I'd love to booby trap mine, and have even daydreamed of how to do it. I finally had to put mine inside my storm door and there it has stayed. Luckily the door is a full view. But this is the third sign so I'm really po'd. Think of the dollars wasted.

My neighbor thought her sign would be safe on her front porch. Wrong. They got it. That's brazen and deserves a booby trap.

I have a metallic one on my car, but I take it off whenever I go inside a store. Damn shame!

Some of my classmates don't have enough money to pay for the Obama & Biden signs at Democratic Headquarters. However, since they support Obama so much, they have stolen them from yards in Emporia to put up in their rooms and so on. I don't agree with this. However, some have said that it really does not matter about his signs in Kansas because McCain will win, so one of my friends (from Ohio) has taken some of them back there when he went, saying that they will do more good there. I suppose that if you lost an Obama sign, it probably is in a better place where it will do more good. I still don't agree with this, but I see how it is really for good, even though it sounds bad. I guess that I am saying to you that even if you lost a sign you are still helping Obama get elected. I hope that makes you feel better.

First of all, I was one who had 2 Obama signs stolen, yes stolen from my yard. You can not justify this action. How can you even try to explain away the other students actions? They took away the right to free speech and expression when they stole our signs. Your excuse does not justify their actions. Your reasoning is exactly what is wrong with this country. Take what you want without regard or respect for others and their property or the ends justify the means.
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! How in the world do you think we have gotten into this horrible financial crisis? Why do people take out credit cards and mortgages with no thought as to how they have to make the payments or what will happen if they can't?
What you wrote does not make me feel better it only makes me sad. I imagine the majority of the signs ended up in a dumpster somewhere.

Amen Sandy. I agree! About the stealing not the politician. Get a job and buy your own stuff don't help yourself to mine. I didn't spend 8 hours of my day working my a$$ off to give you my stuff. (I'm speakingto the theives)

Right on Sandy. Everyone should have a right to their own opinion and those who steel things right out of your front yard should be caught somehow. I'm sure with the signs stolen from all over town someone had to see something. Maybe we should all pay a little more attention to what's going on in our neighborhoods and report this if we see it.

I think the post by 1esustudent was a prank post (PP). At least I hope it was.

I sure hope it was a pp rbow. I'd hate to think that there are some people that believe it ok to steal for a good cause or because they can't afford to buy it them selves. WOW!

99% chance it was kids who like to dress up their rooms. I would like to have a few too but will get them at Demo Rep HQ

I'm sure we will all be glad when Nov 4th arrives and we can take our signs down. I understand that increased interest in this election by young people is a positive thing. I truly hope that they haven't been taking the signs. If you are a high school student, college student or just someone who would like to save a sign for whatever reason, the proper thing to do would be to knock on the person's door and ask them if you could have their sign if they don't want it. I'm saving mine for my son (if it stays in my yard) but there may be others who would gladly give you their sign after the election is over. Please ask! You might be surprised how far you can get by doing the right thing. You have to be prepared for a negative response and it involves a little effort but that is democracy and maybe the 2nd or 3rd person you ask will say yes.

Baloney esustudent. Demo headquarters is only asking for a small donation for the signs. Any student can afford a couple of bucks for a donation. Besides, students spend tons of $$$ on beer drinking anyway.Plus your buds are going to spend more money driving all the way to Ohio just to make a point? Get real! I've lost two signs and I don't give a damn what your reasons are, it's thievery!

In reading the article slipandslide provided the link to, I found the problem right here -- "...there was no evidence the thefts were anything more than teen vandalism. No charges were filed against the boys."

I can see where the man who fired the shot was wrong, but those kids should have been charged with vandalism. This doesn't just relate to political signs; it should relate to all forms of teen vandalism, no matter how light.

create, I totally agree with you. I guess it all boils down to respecting other peoples property. Or should I say the lack of respect. If college students want political signs enough to give up a few beers then I guess that would show how important the sign really is to them.
It may be more the thrill of stealing them that they want. That was a huge tall tale about how it would be a good thing to take all our signs to Ohio. I've been a mom too long to not recognize a fib when I hear it.

If it will give Obama supporters any comfort, someone stole the McCain Palin signs from my front yard, my wife's mother's place, and my neighbor's yard to my south.

My guess is that this is equal opportunity foolishness, probably teen agers having a thrill. Their problem is that sooner or later they'll get caught and someone will press charges. I'm told that stealing electioneering signs is actually a felony.

October 30, 2008 at 4:38 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

create (anonymous) says...

Yes, netloafer, it is a felony. Trouble is, even if they catch the little thieves, charges are rarely filed. Someone usually uses the kids-will-be-kids defense. We need to stop doing that, and when a law already has some teeth in it, then we need to honor it and make kids accountable for their actions.
