Slattery to visit Emporia
Jim Slattery, Democratic candidate for a Kansas seat in the U.S. Senate, will visit downtown Emporia on Monday. Slattery, who is challenging Republican incumbent Pat Roberts, plans to arrive in Emporia at 11 a.m. He will be at Lyon County Democratic headquarters, 829 1/2 Commercial St., for an open house beginning at noon.
Certified Table Captain Class
The Certified Table Captain Class will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 8 at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall, 202 E. 12th Ave. Ed Roith will be the instructor. Table captains are needed for upcoming barbecue contests. There is a $40 fee, which includes all materials. Holds birthday reception
Betty Standiferd, a lifetime resident of the Lebo community, will celebrate her 85th birthday at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Lebo United Methodist Church. Her children and their spouses are Jim and Carrie Standiferd of Emporia and Tom and Linda Fancher of Osage City. She has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family request no gifts.
Holds acoustic jam
All styles of acoustic music — folk, bluegrass, gospel, country and more — will be played at an Acoustic Jam from 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 2, at the Reading Baptist Church. The church is on Vine Street, one block south of Highway K-170 in Reading.
Those who attend may bring their instruments or just come to listen, according to a news release. A concession stand also will be offered.

Pumpkin decorating at the market
There will be a pumpkin decorating contest at the Emporia Farmer’s Market on Wednesday. To enter, bring a decorated pumpkin to the kiosk between 4:45 a.m. 5 p.m. Categories include scariest, funniest and designer. There will be separate divisions for ages 10 and under, ages 11 to 17 and adult.
Holds drivers safety course
The AARP Drivers Safety Course, the newest edition, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7 at the Burlington Recreation Center in Burlington. This classroom refresher course is especially designed for drivers 50 and over, but is open to drivers of all ages. The fee is $10; and insurance discounts are offered. There is no test. Asking for internship applications
Congressman Jerry Moran is accepting applications for spring 2009 internships available in the Washington, D.C., Hays, Hutchinson and Salina offices. Intern responsibilities include assisting Moran and his staff with legislative and administrative projects. The spring internship session begins in January and ends in May. Applications are due by Nov. 14. To apply, students should submit a completed application form, cover letter, resume, college transcript and three letters of reference. The cover letter should explain the student’s interest in public service and the goals the student hopes to achieve by participating. Disabled American Veterans Mobile
service at Wal-Mart
The Disabled American Veterans Mobile Service office will be at Wal-Mart from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 4-7 to provide counseling and claim-filing assistance. This service is free and open to all veterans and members of their families.
