Volleyball substates start Saturday

The Lebo, Olpe and Chase County volleyball teams will be in action in a Class 2A substate on Saturday in Alma.

Top-seeded Lebo (35-2) will take on Lyndon (3-24) at 2 p.m. The winner of that match will play again at 4 p.m. against the winner of the Solomon-Wabaunsee matchup; Solomon carries a 17-14 record into the substate, and Wabaunsee is 15-19.

Third-seeded Olpe (24-9) will open against Burlingame (12-17) at 3 p.m., and at 4 p.m. the winner will take on the winner of the match between St. Marys (34-5) and Chase County (9-19). The championship match will be held at 5 p.m.

In other area substate action, Northern Heights and Council Grove will travel to Riley County on Saturday for their 3A substates. The sixth-seeded Wildcats (13-18) will play the third-seeded host school (17-18) at 3 p.m., with the winner taking on whoever advances between second-seeded Council Grove (20-16) and seventh-seeded Silver Lake (8-24). The other first round matchups are top-seeded Rock Creek vs. No. 8 Mission Valley and fourth-seeded Marysville against fifth-seeded Rossville. The title match will be at 5 p.m.

Osage City will be in action for 3A substate at Richmond, where the second-seeded Indians (32-5) will take on seventh-seeded Eureka (13-18) at 2 p.m. If Osage wins, the Indians will face the winner of Jayhawk Linn (27-10) and West Franklin (6-15) in the semis. The championship will be at 5 p.m.

Madison will host a Class 1A substate on Saturday. The Bulldogs (16-19), seeded fourth in their four-team bracket, will play Hutch Central Christian (36-3) at 6 p.m. The winner will play in the championship match at 7 p.m. against the winner of Southern Coffey County (31-8) and Argonia (28-12).

Hartford loses regional match

Hartford’s volleyball team lost to Madison in its regional volleyball match Tuesday at Hartford, and the Bulldogs went 3-0 in the regional.

The Jaguars dropped the first game 23-25 before losing the second 25-27. Kellie Farr led Hartford with 10 kills, and Paige Hamman added nine. Amanda Zwellmiller and Kristen Williams each served at a 100 percent clip for Hartford.

Madison then defeated Centre 22-25, 25-9, 25-16 and Waverly 25-20, 25-22.

Lebo goes 6-0, wins LCL tourney

Lebo went 6-0 to win the Lyon County League volleyball tournament last Saturday in Emporia.

The top-seeded Wolves defeated Madison in the semifinals by 25-13 and 25-20 scores, then took down Olpe in a three-game championship match, 17-25, 25-9, 25-20. In pool play, Lebo won each of its four matches in two games. It defeated Hartford 25-10, 25-16, Burlingame 25-7, 25-22, Flinthills 25-13, 25-14 and Madison 25-17, 25-16.

Olpe’s second-place finish followed a 5-1 showing. In pool play, the Eagles beat Marais des Cygnes Valley 25-18, 25-12; Burlingame by identical 25-18 scores; Flinthills 25-22, 25-15; and Waverly 25-23, 25-20. Olpe defeated Madison 25-22, 25-21 in championship pool play.

Madison finished sixth in the LCL during the regular season, but its 2-4 record at the tournament was good enough for the third-place finish. In pool play, the Bulldogs beat Southern Coffey County 28-26, 25-17 and Flinthills 25-16, 25-20. The Bulldogs lost to Marais des Cygnes Valley 28-26, 25-21.

Hartford went 0-4 at the tourney, joining Flinthills as the only teams to go winless. The Jaguars fell to SCC 25-13, 25-14; to Lebo 25-10, 25-16; lost to Burlingame 23-25, 25-17, 25-13; and fell to Waverly 25-20, 25-10.

Osage takes FHL tournament title

Osage City came away with the Flint Hills League tournament championship last weekend.

The Indians went 4-1 for the tourney and defeated Council Grove 25-18, 25-23 in the title match. They got there with a two-game victory over West Franklin by 25-15 and 25-23 scores. In pool play, Osage defeated Mission Valley 25-15, 25-18 and Northern Heights 25-14, 25-19, but lost to Herington 19-25, 25-16, 25-21. Herington ended up with the tourney’s No. 3 spot, defeating West Franklin in the third-place match.

Heights finished 1-2 in pool play and didn’t reach the championship round. The Wildcats lost to Herington 25-15, 25-22 and to Osage, and defeated Mission Valley 25-21, 25-16.

Chase County also finished 1-2, losing to West Franklin and Council Grove but defeating Lyndon 25-22, 25-16. Council Grove beat Herington in the semis 25-22, 20-25, 25-20 to reach the title match. The Braves finished 3-2 on the day.
