The university, school district and city announced today an affiliation with ResearchChannel. Above are Michael Erickson, left, the university’s associate vice president for technology and computing services and City Manager Matt Zimmerman.

Starting today, Emporia’s CableOne subscribers can tune in to Channel 8 for news, events and presentations from Emporia State University and the Emporia school district.

“I have the privilege this morning of announcing an exciting new addition in television programming for the Emporia community,” said Michael Erickson, ESU’s associate vice president for technology and computing services. “Emporia State University, in conjunction with USD 253, the city of Emporia and CableOne, is proud to announce an agreement with ResearchChannel.”

ResearchChannel is a consortium of leading universities and academic institutions that share their work with the public, according to a press release.

“With this agreement, not only will ESU faculty, staff and students benefit, but the entire Emporia community will immediately gain access 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to a wealth of commercial-free programming on CableOne’s channel 8,” Erickson said. “Topics range from technology and science innovations to fascinating arts and humanities subjects, and will explore a wide range of current issues in business and technology, K through 12 education, social sciences, health, medicine and more.”

The channel is currently available to more than 30 million viewers, and gives them the opportunity to watch presentations from speakers, researchers and scholars.

“While the opportunity to expose the public to the latest trends in research and education is important, even more exciting is the new ability for Emporia State University to reach out to the community by rebroadcasting programs and events occurring on campus,” Erickson said.

“We’re excited about sharing the learning opportunities that occur on the ESU campus with a global audience,” said ESU president Michael Lane.

An example of the capabilities of the new channel is the ability to rebroadcast portions of Wednesday night’s Bonner and Bonner lecture, presented by James Loewen.

“In addition to ESU programming, channel 8 will also feature content produced by USD 253 which will be included in the local programming schedule,” the press release stated.

“This really is a great partnership for Emporia public schools,” said Nancy Horst, community relations director for USD 253. “We now have the opportunity to air announcements three times a day on a set schedule.” Those announcements will be made at 7 a.m., noon and 5:30 p.m., Horst said. The school district also may occasionally air programming produced by students at EHS.

ESU information will air at 7:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

“During the remainder of the time, viewers can watch quality educational programming,” the press release stated.

Broadcasts of local governing body meetings will now air on CableOne’s channel 18.
