Pancakes for breakfast
The Learning Center Preschool at the First Christian Church will have a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Saturday at the church. Suggested donations are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Proceeds will be used for the Learning Center.
Ham balls for dinner
Admire United Methodist Church will serve dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the lower level of the church. The menu of ham balls, cheesy potatoes, green beans, gelatin salad, hot rolls, dessert, coffee and tea will be served for a freewill offering. Upstairs, baked good, crafts and other items will be for sale.
Or chicken and noodles
The Saffordville United Methodist Church Harvest Supper and Auction will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Saffordville Schoolhouse. Supper will include chicken and noodles, meatballs, vegetables, salads, pies and beverages. Adult cost is $7 for advance tickets; $7.50 at the door; $3 for children 6-12 years; and free for children younger than 6. The auction will include handmade items, baked goods and specialty items.
DARE carnival
The 20th annual Carnival to benefit Emporians for Drug Awareness will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1130 E. Ninth Ave., sponsored by Emporia Aerie and Auxiliary 2587. There will be games, door prizes, a cake walk, face painting and the popular Haunted House. At 2 p.m., there will be costume contest for all age groups from birth to adults. Food available will include hot dogs, chili dogs, chili and potato soup, chili pies, barbecue sandwiches, nachos, cookies, soda, coffee and tea and bottled water. This event is open to the public.
Leaf rakers
The Emporia High School cheer squad is taking orders for yards to rake of leaves. The cheerleaders will rake leaves from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 1. They will provide the rakes and trash bags and haul them away, too. If it rains, they’ll move the raking day to Nov. 8. The squad is asking for a minimum $20 donation per yard. Anyone wanting their yard raked of leaves should call Angie Landwehr at 343-9144 by Oct. 30 to guarantee a work crew.
More pancakes
The 15th annual Emporia Christian School Pancake Feed will be from 7 a.m. to noon on Nov. 1 in the Anderson Building at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. This fall the preschool enrollment increased enough that ECS added a new class and a new teacher. The news release stated, “Our growing numbers mean we need to add another restroom that is close and convenient for our little students and their teachers.” Contributors will receive two “thank-you” tickets at the door and recognition on table tents at the event. ECS is a 501C-3 non-profit organization. Amounts range from $25, Pearl; $50, Emerald; $100, Ruby; $250, Sapphire; $500, silver; $1,000, Gold; $2,500+, Diamond; Other, Friends of Emporia Christian School.
Barbecue ribs
The State Champion Emporia High School Cross Country Team wants to cook for you and deliver, too, for the Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers football game on Nov. 9. To order barbecued ribs, homemade potato salad and Fanestil’s baked beans, call 342-2872, e-mail: ehs_cc_boosters@hotmail.com or get in touch with any cross country team member. Ribs are $14 a slab and potato salad and baked beans are $3 each pound. The last day to order is Nov. 3.
Fighting cancer
A series of benefits are planned for Marlin Sharon, a Coffey County firefighter for 40 years who is undergoing treatment for cancer. The benefits will help Sharon and his family with expenses, according to information from Coffey County Fire District No. 1 in Burlington. All of the events will be held in the Waverly Community Center, 408 Pearson Ave., in Waverly.
Day-long activities will start at 7 a.m. Nov. 1 with a breakfast that will include pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, juice, milk, and coffee. Registration for a poker run will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the first bike out at 11 a.m.
Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Chili or chicken noodle soup, relish and dessert will be offered. A free will donation will be taken for all meals. A drawing will be held after the dinner. Tickets may be purchased at the benefit or in advance from any District 1 firefighter. Bingo will be played for prizes and a cake and pie auction also will be held.
