Emporia State’s volleyball team won 3-2 at No. 10 Truman on Wednesday in five sets: 26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13.
It was only the second time the Hornets have played five sets this season — they beat Pittsburg State in five at home on Oct. 10. The Hornets, ranked ninth in the country, improved to 2-0 this season against the Bulldogs, who beat the Hornets in all three meetings last year and had won their last three meetings against the Hornets at Pershing Arena.
Arica Shepard led Emporia State with 21 kills and 23 digs. Megan Koster added 17 kills and 15 digs, and Hannah Carter had 15 kills and led the Hornets with a .419 hitting percentage. The Hornets outhit the Bulldogs .217 to .199 in the match. Brittney Miller was the fourth Hornet with double-digit kills with 11.
Brianne Boner led ESU with eight blocks and Ting Liu led the Hornets with 62 assists. Amy Byfield tied Shepard for the team lead with 23 digs and Jenna Snook had 12.
Emporia State improved to 10-1 in the MIAA to remain in first place and 24-2 overall. The Hornets return to White Auditorium on Friday for a match against Missouri Western at 7 p.m.
