Lecture tonight
James Loewen will deliver the 2008 Bonner & Bonner Lecture at 7 p.m. today in Webb Lecture Hall in the Memorial Union at Emporia State University. The lecture, about “sundown towns” — communities that would not allow black people inside the city limits between sundown and sunrise — is free and open to the public.
One-on-one forum
Candidates for Emporia-area state legislative races will be featured at a forum at Emporia State University Oct. 29. ESU’s Associated Student Government is sponsoring the meet-and-greet session at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union ballroom.
The format is an innovative approach to reach students this election season, said Jonathan Krueger, ASG’s legislative director. “Sound bites that the media play are only part of the picture, but providing an environment where students can interact on a more personal level with the people they will see on the ballot makes the voter better informed,” he said.
Attending the forum will be Sen. Jim Barnett of Emporia and his Democratic challenger, Kitty Frank; Rep. Peggy Mast of Emporia and her Democratic challenger, Carol Strickland; and Rep. Don Hill of Emporia, who is unopposed.
United Way Thursdays
Gambino’s Pizza at 1003 Industrial Road will donate part of its pizza sales Thursday evening to the United Way of the Flint Hills. The restaurant will give 20 percent of its pizza sales between 5 and 10 p.m. to the organization.
The event is part of United Way Thursdays, a project undertaken by restaurants around the area. Each week, one restaurant donates part of the proceeds from Thursday sales.
