June bug fundraiser continuing

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

T-shirts and raffle tickets remain available for a month-long fundraiser sponsored by the June Bug Cancer Foundation.

The fundraiser coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which runs throughout October.

The foundation, related to the Central Care Cancer Center, provides money to cancer patients to help them pay expenses they hadn’t anticipated, according to spokeswoman Ginger Steiner of the cancer center.

Money raised stays in the community to help local patients, and there are no administrative costs, Steiner said. Volunteers handle all of the activities at no charge for the fundraisers.

“It is to help cancer patients with those extra expenses that they’re not expecting, or maybe if they can pay something, like (another) bill, but they don’t have enough money to pay the electric bill,” Steiner said.

The raffle features a Pink Basket and a Clint Bowyer basket that contains a variety of items. Most of the items have been donated or paid for by individuals in the community who are interested in helping the cancer patients.

The Pink Basket, Steiner said, is valued at $380.

“It’s got a lot of nice things in it,” she said, describing most of them as being pink or somehow related to breast cancer.

The Bowyer basket contains a car autographed by Bowyer and donated by NASCAR Collectibles, a 2007 press pass card donated by L & L Pets, other collectible cards and an oil change donated by Emporia Motors, among other items.

Tickets for the raffle are $1 per ticket, or $5 for six tickets. Drawings for the prizes will be held Oct. 31 at the cancer center, 1401 W. 12th Ave.

T-shirts in pink, gray and white also are available at the cancer center and at the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, 719 Commercial St.

The pink shirts are fitted for women and have “Get your pink on” printed on the back. They sell for $12 for most sizes and $15 for sizes 2X and 3X.

Gray T-shirts are $10 each and white long-sleeved shirts are $15 each.

“Any T-shirts that are left over, we’ll continue to sell them until they are gone,” Steiner said.
