The 2008 Flint Hills Senior Life Fair will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Harvest House behind the Flint Hills Christian Church, 1836 E. Highway 50. The fair will include health screenings, educational sessions, vendor booths, entertainment and door prizes.
The health screenings, available for all ages, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings (requires two-hour fasting) will be offered as well as blood cholesterol for $9 and flu vaccines for $20. Medicare and Medicaid participants will receive the flu vaccine free of charge if they bring their Medicare or Medicaid cards.
The keynote speaker at 12:45 p.m. will be Matt Jones, Emporia native and cancer survivor, who will talk about “Life’s a Marathon — Making Your Golden Years Your Best Years.” Jones, who now lives in California, is a professional speaker, author of three books and “an inspiration to many,” stated the news release.
Other educational sessions include Karen Sommers, ESB Financial Spirited 50 Travel Club, who will speak about “Senior Friendly Travel Opportunities,” a panel discussion on housing options for seniors, and Karla Jo Grimmett, who will present “Drums Alive,” an interactive physical therapy and exercise approach to wellness that combines fun, music and activity.
Admission to the fair is free. Lunch will be catered by the Olpe Chicken House at a cost of $5. Lunch reservations are required by Friday. Registration forms are available at all area senior centers, Newman Regional Health and the Lyon County Department on Aging.
