A great run

WE WOULD LIKE to thank the Flint Hills Technical College, and the businesses that sponsored the first, and hopefully not last, FHTC Benefit poker run. We had a wonderful time driving through the beautiful Flint Hills.
Most people we talked to about our weekend plans had no idea what a poker run was. First of all, there is no running involved, unless you count the smooth running engines. Participants drive, either on motorcycles or in cars, to the various stops where cards are drawn, at random from a full deck. There is no poker skill involved — just a lot of luck. Between three hands, we each managed two pair per hand.
A poker run is not a race. It is a leisurely drive between stops. Most participants stopped and had lunch at Lake Wabaunsee, dessert in Council Grove and snacks at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. This lead to a wonderful day of visiting local sights that we had heard about and never visited.
So, Emporia, mark your calendars for next year, when we hope the Tech College puts on another poker run. Beautiful scenery, good food and wonderful people all out to have a good time for a good cause. What more can you ask for on a Saturday afternoon.
