Teams from the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are in Lyon, Chase and Greenwood counties to conduct preliminary damage assessments that resulted from severe storms and flooding in the area Sept. 11 through 17.
Four state teams made up of 13 people are working with an equal number of FEMA personnel to determine the extent of damage to public infrastructure, according to an announcement from the Adjutant General’s office.
The surveys began Oct. 13 and should be completed by the end of next week.
Two requirements must be met to qualify for federal assistance: A county must have a per-capita damage of $3.28 and there must be approximately $3.6 million in damages to meet the federal damage threshold.
If the threshold is met, Gov. Sebelius may request public assistance to restore roads, bridges, and other infrastructure damaged or destroyed by the floods.
