Where they stand: Lyon County Clerk

Friday, October 17, 2008

Mike Dorcey, Democrat

1. (Qualifications) My active interest in and knowledge of government, politics and public service began in college. Since then, I have mentored and managed both paid and volunteer staffs. These diverse life experiences and interests have enhanced my skills as a consensus builder, problem solver, innovator and community leader. I have a record of public service starting with voluntarily enlisting in the Army during Vietnam to most recently coordinating fund-raising and construction of Peter Pan Playground.

2. (Changes) I want to advance the county clerk’s office in ways to make it more user friendly and a more open and ready source of information for the public. I will start by further developing the office’s Web page to include more information and revamping it so it is more intelligible to users. I will further expand efforts to educate, register and turn out voters in all areas of Lyon County.

3. (Elections) Elections are most fair when the most people vote, so I will strive to register all eligible residents and encourage them to actually vote. I will press for the adoption of a paper trail so that every vote can be verified. To make elections more efficient, I will assure every polling place is easily accessible to all and conducive to smooth traffic flow and voter privacy. I will recruit more volunteer poll workers to assist voters in moving through the election process easily. My aim is to be responsible with your tax dollars and your vote.

Tammy Vopat, Republican

1.(Qualifications) Since 2001 I have held the position of the Personal Property Supervisor in the Lyon County Appraisers Office. Experienced with the valuation processes, field appraisals, oil & gas returns, mapping, deeds, Economic Development Exemptions, tax grievances, certification of values to the County Clerk, and the implementation of On-Line Filing of property renditions.

Previously, dispatcher for Birch Telecom, 1998-2001. From 1979 to 1998 I was employed at IBP, 15 years production, 4 years Personnel Clerk.

2.(Changes) As a life long resident of Lyon County and with my experience working for Lyon County, this is a natural progression into the County Clerks position. Knowing and working with the staff ensures a smooth transition. I have a proven record with Lyon County.

My desire is to continue excellence in customer service with the existing staff. An open door policy and cross training of office personnel will ensure highest efficiency.

3. (Elections) With the changes in legislation, I look forward to continuing the polling opportunities in the nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, and hospital based long term care units, which will ensure that everyone who has the desire to vote will have the accessibility to vote.

Electronic voting has proven very efficient and accurate. Having an efficient number of polling places within budget constraints to save tax dollars is a priority. Also, with the new legislation allowing for part-time poll workers, thorough training will be a priority.
