EHS soccer team loses fourth straight

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Emporia High’s boys soccer team suffered its fourth straight loss on Wednesday night, losing at Shawnee Heights 2-0.

The loss was also the third straight time the Spartans (7-6) have been shut out.

“At the beginning of the game we had great opportunities,” EHS coach Angel Cornejo said, “but Heights goalie Derick Allen had great saves.”

One of Allen’s best plays came on a cross-shot by Alex Guevara, when Allen extended his arms to make the stop. Later in the first half, Jose Rios had two good shots at the goal; Allen stopped the first one, leaving the ball loose in the box for Rios to take another shot, which Allen also got his hand on.

Shawnee Heights (11-1-1) scored both of its goals in the first half, with one by Dustin Deisher and one by Jake Shafer.

“We played aggressive the first half, but in the second half we just relaxed and stopped attacking,” Cornejo said.

Emporia will return to action Monday when it hosts Bishop Carroll in a makeup game from Tuesday night’s wet-field postponement. The Spartans have three regular-season games remaining, but Cornejo said it’s already been determined that EHS will be the fourth seed for regionals, which will begin the week after next.

“I just want to keep our guys healthy and ready for whoever we play,” Cornejo said.
