Hay giveaway for dog bedding

Bales of hay will be given away on Saturday, Nov. 8, by the Humane Society of the Flint Hills. The giveaway will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon — or until the hay is gone, whichever comes first — at the East Emporia Veterinary Clinic at Exchange Street and Sixth Avenue.

The hay needs to be used during cold winter months to shelter dogs from the cold and provide a bedding to lie on. Covers on dog house doors also are recommended by the Society.

“Be sure to check their water often to ensure that it is not frozen, and remember that they eat more because they are burning more calories to try and stay warm,” a news release from the Society stated.

Flinthills Mall ‘Spooktacular’

Local business have joined Flinthills Mall businesses in an effort to offer a fun and safe Halloween event for area children, according to an announcement from mall marketing administrator Lydia Cope. The event will be held Halloween night.

Area youngsters can go to the mall to trick-or-treat and, for a $2 entry fee, can enter a pumpkin-carving contest or costume contest, or visit the Haunted House. The Haunted House will be open for children 10 and under on Oct. 29 and 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. Proceeds from the events will be donated to local charities, Cope said.

Walgreens has donated a setup for taking Halloween photos and hot dogs, nachos and shaved ice will be sold at the Tiki Hut.

Special meeting

Acquiring sewer project easements is on the agenda for a special meeting of the Neosho Rapids city council. The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the community building.
