Prairie harvest festival
The public will have the opportunity to participate in living history Saturday with an old-fashioned prairie harvest festival and barn dance at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Chase County.
Festival activities include cider making, wagon rides, live historical music and pumpkin carving from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Historic Dutch oven and ranch stove cooking will be demonstrated from 10 a.m. to noon. Ranch hands will pause from noon to 1 p.m. to eat lunch prepared by the women of the ranch.
There will be a barn dance in the limestone barn from 6 to 9 p.m. with live music by the Tallgrass String Band. Refreshments will be served.
For more information call (620) 273-8494. The preserve is located two miles north of Strong City on Highway 177. The preserve’s ranch headquarters is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Democratic picnic, rally
Tickets are $15 in advance for individuals and $25 for families for a Democratic picnic and political rally from noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Peter Pan Park. The same tickets purchased Saturday will be $20 and $30.
The event is sponsored by the Lyon County Democrats and 1st District congressional candidate James Bordonaro, who will be the host.
Plans call for a meal, speeches and a silent aucution. Afterward, people are invited to walk Emporia precincts with local candidates.

Republican rally
Guests expected at a rally Saturday afternoon at the Lyon County Republican Party Headquarters include 1st District Rep. Jerry Moran and Rep. Todd Tiahrt from Wichita. The rally, scheduled from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the headquarters, 13 E. Sixth Ave., is sponsored by the 1st District Congressional District Republican Committee.
The rally is open to the public.
