Done deal?

IT WOULD SEEM that the Lowe’s project is a “done deal” since Mr. Longbine, city commission member, RDA member and Chamber of Commerce member approves of it heartily, in spite of the planning board’s decision. I’m sure that he knows what is best for Emporia.
I do hope, however, that he will somehow find the time to explain just how the tax increment financing will affect the rest of the city. Is it possible that the taxes paid on purchases at the new Lowe’s and other businesses brought into town will not go into the general fund? That those taxes will be “earmarked” for servicing improvements and debt on the development of that “blighted” site? That any taxes which had been flowing into the general fund from other businesses in town will now be dedicated to the Lowe’s project?
But I’m being an alarmist. Undoubtedly the city commissioners have no personal interest in the project and their only concern is the betterment of Emporia and our current business community, including those “downtown” and on the east side.
