The Emporia Gazette

Yet to reach a full four-quarter game, Madison, the No. 1-ranked team in Eight-Man I, made Friday night’s game its fourth straight mercy-rule win.

Hoping to bounce back from a 58-8 loss to Crest the previous week, Hartford could find no answer for the Bulldog offensive pounding, losing to Madison 50-0.

Madison’s running game drove the Bulldogs. Michael Luthi began the scoring with a 39-yard run and followed it with a completed conversion run. He ran again for a 3-yard touchdown. Caleb Hamilton found the end zone on a 3-yard run to end the first quarter, making the score 22-0.

In the second quarter, Hartford couldn’t find a way to slow the offensive output. Hamilton rushed for two touchdowns, and Ott completed a 14-yard pass to Reece Childers.

Ending the game in its normal fashion, Madison’s Luthi put away the Jaguars with a final 9-yard run in the third quarter, invoking the mercy-rule.

“We had a well-balanced attack from our backs tonight. The line did well for our offense, and Dylan Barnard made things easier for our defense with several touchbacks, making it difficult for Hartford to start much offense,” Madison assistant coach Tracy Griffin said.

Madison has what looks to be a four-quarter game next week against undefeated Crest. Looking to snap its two-game losing streak, Hartford will battle Lebo.

Olpe 42, Uniontown 0

Traveling to yet another distant opponent for yet another big win, Olpe easily doused the momentum of Uniontown’s previous win.

Unlike its earlier wins, Olpe had to make slow drives and manage good ball control.

“Offensively, we didn’t really score on big plays,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “We had to march down the field and sustain drives, and we took time off the clock.”

Matt Redeker had a strong passing night as he finished 9-of-12 for 165 yards and threw for two touchdowns. Olpe’s rushing attack was led by Cole Krueger with 12 carries for 54 yards, and Josh Lambert had eight carries for 48 yards.

“Passing-wise, Redeker had a good night, going 9-of-12,” Schmidt said. “He read coverage well and put the ball where we needed it.”

The Olpe Eagles distributed their scoring well throughout their team with six different players scoring. Schmidt, Redeker, Lambert and Jacob Kehres all found the end zone on short runs, while Redeker passed to Krueger and Bradley Argabright for touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Olpe defense did its part, holding Uniontown to only 83 yards of total offense.

“Our defense, for the most part, played well and set the tone tonight,” Schmidt said.

Olpe looks to build on its win as the Eagles host Maranatha next Friday.

Southern Coffey County 34, Lebo 22

After falling prey to the Madison Bulldogs last week, Southern Coffey County held on to win against Lebo.

While rushing once again hurt the Wolves, the passing of Southern Coffey County’s Ben Spencer opened a new wound. Spencer threw five touchdown passes and finished 11-of-17 for 280 yards.

Spencer found Trevor Smith on a 70-yard pass in the first quarter to begin SCC’s scoring. In the second quarter, Lebo put up its first points on a short run, but SCC struck back with two more passes from Spencer. After a second Lebo touchdown, Spencer threw for his fourth touchdown to end the half.

In the second half, Spencer threw his final touchdown, connecting with Justin Shields in the third quarter. This turned out to be enough to hang on, as Lebo’s only scoring for the rest of the game came in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard run by Calvin Perry.
