Road closing on Wednesday

Road 170 between Roads F and G will be closed for two weeks starting first thing Wednesday morning to replace a cross-road culvert. The road will be re-opened Oct. 29, weather permitting.

Southern Lyon meeting

The Southern Lyon County board of education will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the boad office in Hartford.

The agenda includes approval of financial reports and pledged securities, pest control services, substitute and emergency substitute teachers for the 2008-09 school year, personnel, Facility Study committee member, Teacher Mentor program, patron request to appear, early retirement resignation incentives, facilities study committee report personnel, a facilities report, and student matters.

City meeting at Hartford

The City of Hartford will at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the City Hall at Hartford.

The agenda includes reports by: maintenance supervisor Dan Fegan on water and sewer; city clerk Donna J. Kuhn on the city’s 1 percent sales tax, which has been approved by the Department of Revenue for collections to begin in January; a contract extension with Galaxy Cablevision and possibly raising the percentage of revenue for the city; progress on a water improvement project by Bruce Boettcher of BG Consultants.

Agler and Gaeddert has requested, through Hartford City Attorney Stephen J. Smith, a mediation meeting with mayor, city clerk and others with knowledge of the issue to be discussed.

The board also will receive the 2007 audit report and will hear from Sam Seeley of the Lyon County Zoning Commission, who will confirm that the Hartford levee has been certified and is now on the Flood Insurance Rate Map.

He will provide information about possibly receiving preferred rates for floodplain insurance before Congress passes a more stringent measure.

Computer classes

The Emporia Public Library, in cooperation with area libraries, is offering a variety of classes about using the computer. All classes are free and require registration by calling the library at 340-6462. Space is limited.

Basic Word Processing will be held at 6 p.m. Monday. Participants will learn about typing and using key formatting tools on a computer.

“Google, do you? Personalizing the Internet” will be offered at 7 p.m. Wednesday and 2 p.m. Thursday at the Flint Hills Technical College. Participants will learn about tools such as MyYahoo!, IGoogle, Google sites, Docs and Calendar.

AudioBooks Online will be offered at 2 p.m. Oct. 24. The class showcases the audiobooks, videos and music available free via the Internet and provides information about how to download them easily and quickly, a news release stated.

“Homework Help,” especially for parents of school children, will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Flint Hills Technical College. Free online services with live tutors are available through the Homework Kansas website. Participants will learn how to access this and other useful resources to assist students with school work.

“Computer Safety and Security” will be held at 6 p.m. Oct 30. Topics include how to protect your computer from viruses and worms, spyware and malware, and other problems.

More computer classes will be held in November. A complete list can be found on the EPL Web site at www.emporialibrary.org.

Auxiliary wants more members

Newman Regional Health Auxiliary is looking for new members. Anyone interested in joining may attend the annual Membership Reception from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Manor lower level atrium, 2300 Industrial Road, or call Janet Haag at Newman Regional Health, 343-6800, ext. 2525, for a membership packet.

Members can volunteer at information desks, the snack bar, gift shop or they may deliver mail and flowers.
