Northern Heights’ girls cross country team finished first out of three teams at the Osage City Invitational on Thursday.
Heights had the top two individual finishers on the girls side, led by freshman Kimberly Smith. Her time of 16 minutes, 40 seconds was 27 seconds ahead of teammate Jasmine King. Gesina Miller (fifth) and Amy Lee (eighth) also finished in the top 10 for Heights, and Elizabeth Karr finished 12th.
The Heights girls finished with 21 points, ahead of Mission Valley’s 48 and Osage City’s 56. Cally Aspegren was Osage’s top finisher, coming in fourth. Lauren Poertner and Katie Schroeder also posted top-20 finishes; Poertner came in 14th and Scroeder 17th. Lebo’s D’Lani Holland was the Wolves’ only representative but placed sixth.
On the boys side, Osage City came in second out of five teams with 53 points, 11 behind Herington’s 42. Kyle Stromgren and Cole Carlson led the way for the Indians posting fourth- and fifth-place finishes. Also placing in the top 20 were Luke Gogolski (13th), Tyler Bartee (15th), Aaron Furr (16th) and Nathan Johnson (18th). Heights placed fourth with 83 points. Justin Heston (sixth) and Chris Seematter (seventh) placed in the top 10, and Brian Hultgren came in 19th.
Olpe boys win Eureka run
Led by a third-place finish from Glen Haag and a fourth-place showing by Colby Nuessen, Olpe’s boys cross country squad took first place at the Eureka Invitational on Tuesday.
The Eagles scored 29 points to easily beat Central’s 58. Ethan Hall also placed in the top 10 for Olpe, finishing eighth. Luke Miller (11th) and Colton Bess (13th) also cracked the top 20.
Olpe’s girls came in second with 63 points. Katelyn Henderson finished second for the Eagles, and Kelsey Camien clocked a seventh-place finish. In the junior varsity boys race, the Eagles had two of the top three finishers, with Lance Sadler taking the title and Noah Haag coming in third. Katie Krueger (fourth) and Megan Ansten (10th) earned top-10 finishes in the JV girls run.
Hartford ran two varsity athletes in each race Tuesday. Spencer Rosenquist was the only top-20 finisher for the Jaguars, clocking a 19:10 time in the boys race to finish 14th. Cheyenne Veatch won the JV girls race for the Jags, and Chris Moomey finished 19th in the boys race. Trevor Kuhens earned a second-place finish in the seventh-grade boys run.
