Emporia High’s soccer team got shut out for the second consecutive game on Thursday night, losing at Seaman 1-0 in overtime.
The Spartans were battling the flu bug, which sidelined Jose Rios. Coach Angel Cornejo said Gary Rivera and Alex Guevara also weren’t feeling well, but still played, and their fatigue made a difference.
“As a player and as a coach, it isn’t easy to lose games like the ones we’ve lost in the last two weeks,” Cornejo said.
Early in the overtime, Guevara got past two defenders into a one-on-one situation with Seaman’s goalkeeper, but Guevara’s kick sailed high and wide. Seaman scored the winning goal in the sixth minute of OT.
Goalkeeper Cory Obermeyer had six saves for Emporia (7-5), which has lost three straight games.
