Lyon County has registered about 492 first-time voters since Sept. 15.
“People have been coming in and registering to vote,” said Lannie Linebarger, deputy county clerk. “That’s what we’re doing is mainly getting people registered.”
Linebarger said there were 18,716 registered voters in Lyon County on Sept. 15. That number jumped to 19,208 on Thursday. She said 492 of the voters are first-time voters. About 200 are voters who have moved into the county.
“That’s pretty good for a county with declining population,” said Bob Davis, Lyon County commissioner.
The deadline to register to vote in Kansas is Oct. 20, Linebarger said. Many states have deadlines earlier than this. That factor has caused an influx of people to register in Lyon County because they are hearing that voting ends in other states early.
Advanced voting in Lyon County starts Wednesday and runs through Nov. 3. Advance voting ends at noon Nov. 3 — the day before the general election on Nov. 4.
