MANHATTAN — Emporia High scored on a Corey Bacon 31-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes left in the first half to hold a 20-14 lead on Manhattan (5-0) at halftime at Bishop Stadium.
Bacon took a pitch from Taylor Euler and ran the rest of the way down the right sideline for his second TD of the game. His first was an untouched 44-yard run off the right guard that tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter.
Emporia's rushing attack has produced both big plays and plays that are just good enough to move the chains. Bacon has 114 yards on just five first-half carries, and fullback Mark Kolmer has 104 yards on 20 carries. The Spartans produced 241 yards on the ground in the first half.
Defensively, Emporia (3-2) has collected two turnovers: A fumble recovery by Taylor Lee off a mishandled pitch by running back Derek Campbell, and Euler's second interception from the safety position in as many weeks.
