Drug raid nets two arrests

Thursday, October 9, 2008

Two individuals are in custody today following the execution of two search warrants Wednesday afternoon. In a separate incident, a pizza delivery driver was robbed and assaulted Wednesday evening.

Emporia Police Chief Gary Smith said this afternoon that the warrants were executed simultaneously — one at 810 Exchange St. and one at 1106 East St., Apt. 7. Officers executed the warrant at 810 Exchange St. with a special response team because it was a high-risk entry. The team forced their way into that home. Uniformed officers executed the warrant at the apartment on East Street.

Charges are forthcoming and names of the individuals will be released when they have been charged, Smith said.

“We did confiscate several quantities of different drugs and cash,” Smith said, adding that the drugs were illegal street drugs.

The warrants were the result of about nine months of investigation with the help of people in the surrounding community and in an effort to clean up drug houses, Smith said.

Charges will be filed either this afternoon or Friday morning.

Police are looking for a suspect in another incident at 11:52 p.m. Wednesday. A Papa John’s Pizza delivery driver was assaulted and robbed at 621 Lakeview St.

“He (the suspect) came behind the bushes and assaulted the delivery (driver) and took the pizzas,” Smith said. “He was treated and released at the scene.”

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, with a white hat, black and white shoes and was wearing a bandana over his face.

Anyone with information on the robbery can contact Crime Stoppers at 342-2273 or 1-800 KS Crime (1-800-572-7463) if you wish to remain anonymous. Otherwise, call the Emporia Police Department at 343-4200.

I stumbled across the tail end of the investigation on Exchange yesterday afternoon. As soon as I saw an officer with gloves on and the K9 deputy's car parked in the street I knew they'd nailed some slimeball for drugs. It was right by the school, too. How sickening that drugs were being peddled there! I used to live on East Street in college and it was full of drug houses way back then. I guess some things never change, unfortunately. Kudos to the local law enforcement for getting drugs off the street.

Robbing a pizzia man is getting pretty low. As far as the drugs, I'm glad there are less druggies running loose thanks to the cops, way to go!
