EHS volleyball loses to two ranked teams

The Emporia High volleyball team went 1-2 at Highland Park on Tuesday, beating the host team before dropping matches against two Class 6A top-five teams.
The Spartans defeated Highland Park 25-21, 25-14, then took on 6A’s No. 2 team, Washburn Rural. The Junior Blues disposed of the Spartans 10-25, 11-25. Emporia then took on fifth-ranked Manhattan and won the first set, 25-20, before dropping the next two 17-25 and 19-25.
EHS is now 17-12 on the year. The Spartans will host the Emporia Tournament on October 18.
EHS golf finishes 5th
Emporia High’s girls golf team scored a 433 at the Manhattan High Invitational on Monday, good for a fifth-place finish out of 10 teams.
No Spartans medaled at the meet. Maryann Bennett led the Spartans with a 99, eight strokes away from a medal. In other Spartan results, Hannah Watkins shot a 103, Rachel Clopton carded a 110, Melissa Heinitz a 121 and Makenzie Harder and Kelsey Burenheide each shot a 134. Manhattan won the event, shooting 346 as a team.
