Three Emporia High School students have been recognized as academically talented by the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Seniors Joel Bland, Zach Button and Corinne Edds have been named Commended Students in the 2009 National Merit program and have been awarded letters of commendation.
Joel is the son of Paul and Lendi Bland of Emporia. Zach is the son of Sue Button of Emporia and Randy Button. Corinne is the daughter of David Edds and Tracy Edds-Hirata of Emporia.
These students are among approximately 34,000 Commended Students in the nation being recognized this fall for their academic promise. The commendation is based on outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Qualifying Test in 2007.
Although they will not continue in the competition for 2009 National Merit awards, the Commended Students are among the top 5 percent of the students who entered the competition by taking the qualifying test.
