Morning fire caused by bird's nest

Thursday, October 2, 2008

A bird’s nest in a gas-powered furnace was the cause of a fire this morning at 3601 W. Sixth Ave.

Rex Fisher, battalion chief at the Emporia Fire Department, said the bird’s nest was in the heater unit and caught fire this morning. The fire was under control shortly after the call came in just after 8 a.m. The damage was confined to the heating unit and fire crews were venting the building.

Tom Andrews, Emporia fire marshal, reminds the public to have their heaters inspected by a qualified person before turning it on for the season. October is Fire Prevention Month.

“And make sure your smoke detector works,” Fisher added.

Hope this isn't a dumb question, but how did birds get all the way in to the heater unit to begin with?

To answer your question, its a forced air furnace that has a venting system designed to take away the fumes (its in a warehouse). The vents were open and the birds came in through there.

From what I heard, they were brought here for Tyson. They carry all of the items Tyson would need to maintain everyday productivity. Although I believe they are now accepting business from other industries in the area.
