More vetting

Thursday, October 2, 2008

TOMLINSON’S RECENT column on Palin merits an emphatic retort. After listing her numerous disqualifiers, he concludes that survey data indicates women are ignoring the blatant evidence casting doubt on her presidential suitability. What he implies is that women will close their eyes and vote their resentments and allegiance as women rather than their good sense.

Given my respect for the intelligence of females who, in many ways, are superior to that of males, I doubt strongly that they would be that stupid.

That Palin puts her friends in office, uses her power as an instrument of revenge against her offenders, lies, evades, misrepresents, and distorts, along with her inexperience, are all remindful of the rigid, far-right Bush legacy.

That integrity of mind would have no claim on women, when confronted with beguiling, seductive charm seems incomprehensible. Women are not so blind as to trade the well-being of the nation and its people for the exercise of malice.

Meanwhile, the troopergate scandal continues, remindful of the Nixon cover-up.

Recently Palin has redefined the Republican campaign as a Palin-McCain one, a symbolic, self-promoting castration.

The Alaska scenario suggests husband Todd would be a significant player as her frontline adviser and hatchet man. Incredible!

I now note Palin’s 10-point acceptability drop among women. McCain’s choice of her as vice president, to court disaffected females, was viewed by many Republicans as a colossal gamble.

To me, it was a mindless one. Surely, the vice presidency deserved a more thorough, thoughtful and responsible vetting than what appears. The word “Maverick” derives from Sam Maverick, a Texas cattleman who refused to brand his cows.

Therefore, any stray, unbranded cow was his. Today, Maverick is the banner of ascribed virtue.

Yes, Julius; the woman is a disaster. She is beautiful, intelligent, charismatic, educated, athletic, a musician, a loving wife and mother, a mayor, a governor, a reformist, and now candidate for vice-president of The United States. She has an 80% approval rating of citizens in her home state. She is loved and trusted by millions of Americans. What a loser.

If either Obama or Biden had half her qualifications and character, their ticket would have a 20 point lead in the polls by now.

It sounds as if you may have bitten into some mighty sour grapes. Perhaps a glass of water and a dose of reality would cure that.

I missed it - which politician was it that DIDN'T put their friends in office, used their power, etc.. etc...? Who was that? I must have missed the name...... maybe you slept thru most of the Clinton years?

I truly hope Troopergate continues to be blown all out of proportion. And gets even bigger. I'm sorry, Julius, you may think so in your own little corner of the world, but I doubt that much of mainstream America is going to have much sympathy for a law officer that tasered his 10-year old stepson, poached moose, has had multiple reprimands, etc, etc.....

Palin is a good (and typical) politician. In over her head, but still a good politician. She won't help McCain much, but it's fun to watch her try.

Julius, I'm sorry I haven't been on the Gazette's website for a while, because I would have given you some support on your well considered letter! Palin is a disaster--an embarrassment to women. John McCain could have chosen from among a large group of more experienced, more apparently intelligent, more professional and articulate women. Why he picked Sarah Palin is a mystery to me. The fact that he did reinforces my opinion that he is not the leader I want in the Oval Office!
